Cash is king. There have been numerous times where having cash on hand would have saved us a lot of hassle. Having extra US dollars handy as well as the local currency is definitely something that we found helpful. Rule of threes before entering a new country:

1. Download a google map of the area you’ll be entering offline.

2. Research the best SIM card and network provider and get one as soon as crossing the border.

3. Research bank options and locate where your closest ATM is.

The overwhelming distance of a big day can seem daunting. If you simply break up the day into bite-size chunks, be that 5 blocks of 20km or 1hr segments the total distance becomes much more manageable.

Take it slow and don’t forget to look up and enjoy where you are. Always assume the best in people and say yes to the offers that come your way. We’ve made friends and shared experiences that we’d never dreamt of, simply by leaning into situations and saying yes.

Pack light and comfy, weight is your enemy. Your setup will change as you cycle, you’ll learn how to streamline your gear as the kilometers tick over.

Some essentials for your trip:

- Cabbie ties

- Elastic bands

- Duct tape

- Sunblock

- Lip ice

Repair your punctures as soon as you can. Finding yourself with no working tubes in 40*C or freezing cold rain is not fun.

Finally, in line with these essentials, having First Ascent’s heatshield really proved itself on the gruelling days of 100km plus rides in 38 degree heat, and is simply a must have.

Once again, don’t forget to enjoy yourselves along the way, and stay tuned for some more detailed blogs of our traveling.
