Fish River Canyon Multi-Day Hike

Known as the second largest canyon in the world, the Fish River Canyon is a bucket list hike for any adventurer. The Fish River is officially the longest river in Namibia and stretches roughly 650km in length. With its towering rocks and deep ravines, this multi-day hike is sure to capture your imagination and soothe your soul. It has been said that the silence in the canyon is so noticeable, that you can hear the blood pumping through your veins – the exact kind of unwinding that is necessary for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

As temperatures tend to skyrocket during the Summer months, this hike is only doable from 1 May to 15 September each year. Fish River is also known for its challenging terrains which will see hikers through sand, rocks and river crossings etc. Physical fitness and mental stamina are key factors to ensure you’re sufficiently prepared.

The hiking trail only permits 30 hikers per day, so it’s advisable to book your hike well in advance (12 months to be safe).

Sun protection is of vital importance as there is virtually no shade during the day, with each day exposing hikers to the elements from +- 8 hours at a time. Temperatures also go to extremes from morning to evening, so be sure to pack sufficiently for both cold and hot temperatures. The sulphur springs and hot pools en route make for an even more enjoyable adventure, with the chance of even spotting wild horses.

Most hikers complete the Fish River Canyon hike in 3-5 days, depending on fitness levels and other contributing factors such as weather and group size.
