Winter in South Africa means something different to you depending on where you live in the country. Layering up is one way to stay warm and be ready for any changes in the conditions Mother Nature decides to throw at you. When building your outfit, think in three layers; a base layer, mid-layer and outer layer. The right combination of these layers will have you riding through winter regardless of the temperatures.
Pro Tip:
A pre and post-ride coffee come highly recommended to help to add that extra layer of warmth inside during the depth of winter.
BASELAYERS
FROM THE BASE UP
The most underrated garment that you can add to your outfit on a chilly ride. These bottom layers are the unsung heroes of winter, they work overtime to regulate your core temperature by wicking sweat away from your body keeping you dry and warm. Our favourite base layer for winter riding is the Heatshield, available in a vest or long sleeve option. This base layer is so comfortable you may even find yourself pairing it with office attire during the week.

ADD WARMTH
Additional items like a pair of fleece-lined gloves or toe covers can make a big difference to your comfort when the temperatures get low. A neck gaiter that can be pulled up over your nose or a pair of toe caps over your shoes to protect you from the icy wind when you’re moving will keep your extremities warm. These accessories can also easily be removed if you get hot during a ride and packed into your pocket.
