Dryland Traverse 2023 - Corrie

Four days of running, camping, and chilling by the pool with ice-cold beers. This is what the Dryland Traverse offers. Oh, and did I mention it is fully catered for, with steaks made on the braai? Because salads don’t get you over mountains.

My dad and I decided to run the race together. It was his first trail running event and coming from a road background it seemed like a good challenge. It was.

Day 1

Day 1 took us through the Cango Caves. The incredible features of the cave lit up by our headlamps as we enjoyed the novelty of the experience.

Day 2

On Day 2 all the runners were shuttled to the top of the Swartberg Pass. There was an air of excitement for the day. It was electric. Running along a technical jeep track we enjoyed the camaraderie of the effort. Aid station 1 was soon reached and we filled our First Ascent running packs with gels, bars and numerous other snacks. We cruised along the level sections and took it a bit slower on the climbs. My dad was doing great! After the second aid station, the tough technical descent began. It was a slow going that required a lot of concentration. My dad got some cramps, but a medic gave us salt tabs and Rennie’s and he recovered. Soon after we enjoyed the best steak, I have had in a long time washed down with an ice-cold beer.

Day 3

Day 3 was another long day out. Our legs were starting to feel it. We paced ourselves through the amazing farmlands. The karoo was showing off after the rain with greenery. This stage of the race was highlighted by river crossing after river crossing. At each one hands were offered to assist across slippery boulders.

After a delicious supper, the party started and was soon in full swing. The theme, ‘Deep Sea Jamboree’. It might have been the highlight of the event with runners dressed up in elaborate ocean-inspired costumes. Never before was I surrounded by so many mermaids.

Day 4

Our last run before the finish line. 10km of easier terrain. With a slight sting in the end. We crossed the finish line with high fives going all around. Music blaring and lunch waiting. We had made it. Four days of running.

To summarize, what a jol!
