The Derma-Tec Baselayer range from First Ascent is my all-time favourite baselayer for kayaking expeditions and also my “go-to” everyday baselayer for just about any other outdoor activity. I use Derma-Tec for a wide range of activities, from whitewater kayaking in extreme Arctic conditions to milder SA temperatures, for trail running, hiking, mountain biking, snow-boarding, paragliding etc, etc… In winter, I even sleep in them (I kid you not!)
I have used many different brands of thermals and baselayers over the years but ever since First Ascent launched the Derma-Tec range I have looked no further. Here’s why:
- Body hugging fit = better thermal performance. I find the extra elasticity of the Derma-Tec baselayer results in a closer fit to my body, which means it is more efficient at doing what it is designed to do. Even paddling in really cold places like Norway and Iceland I rarely have to use more than one layer. In extreme cases, I will put on a short-sleeved layer over a long-sleeve layer to help maintain core temperature.
- Good quality build = longer lasting. To me, Derma-Tec is the Rolls Royce of baselayers and worth paying a little more for. It feels slightly thicker than a standard poly-prop baselayer and seems to have a tighter weave. This all gives it the feel of a really high-quality garment but the proof is in the performance. Kayaking is a sport that is really hard on equipment but despite continued use over several years, they show no sign of becoming stretched or saggy. I also can’t recall ever having had a hole or tear.
- Comfort = happiness. Derma-Tec is without doubt the most comfortable baselayer I have ever used. It is not scratchy (like some other brands I have used) and the seam-free technology means no chaffing - no matter how many continuous hours on the go.
Derma-Tec is a purpose-built and ingenious innovation in base-layer technology that regulates my body temp, keeps me functioning at optimum levels and is so comfortable I often forget it's there.
I highly recommend it for paddle-sports but no matter what your sport, Derma-Tec is the bomb!!
