The Sentinel Peak is located in the breathtaking Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park is also sometimes referred to as the ‘chain ladders’ hike due to the reinforced chain ladders erected to assist hikers up an almost-vertical rock face.
The walking path is clearly marked, however due to the steep nature of the climb, and the rugged landscape, inexperienced hikers are advised to take a guide or seasoned hiker along. There is ample lush flora to observe, making it the perfect hike for plant-enthusiasts.
The spectacular scenery from the top of the sentinel overlooks the Drakensberg, as well as the Tugela Falls (the second highest waterfalls in the world!) which can be seen up close at the edge of the sentinel if rainfall has been observed.
Be sure to pack lots of healthy snacks and take along enough liquids to ensure you’re sufficiently hydrated as temperatures may vary greatly.
