Rim of Africa Multi-Day Hiking Trails

The iconic Rim of Africa multi-day hiking trail stretches from the majestic Cederberg mountain range, all the way to Outeniqua and consists of 9 Traverses to choose from.

Hikers have the option to combine all 9 Traverses which is more commonly referred to as the Thru-Hike, lasting roughly 58 days and spans over +- 750km in total. The distance, terrain, and weather conditions make this a must-do hike for long-distance adventure seekers with a high level of physical and mental stamina.

The Traverses are as follows:

Cederberg: Spoilt with some serious scenery stretching from north to south, the classic Cederberg traverse starts at Pakhuis and ends at Middelberg Pass
Duration: +- 7 days
Distance: +- 90km

Kouebokkeveld: Often mistaken for the breathtaking peaks of the Drakensberg, this route boasts incredible rock formations and secret valleys of desolation.
Duration: +- 6 days
Distance: +- 60km

Skurweberge: This tough traverse crosses the Atlantic/Indian ocean watershed line across the Witzenberg down to Ceres and boasts with a beautiful mix of off-trail, farmlands, and cooling pine forests along the way.

Distance: +- 84km

Hex River: The vast amphitheatre flaunts some rich vegetation and rock formations that will leave you aghast. You’ll be led through Fynbos and eventually make your way to the Klein Karoo with its splendid rock pools.

Distance: +- 92km

Langeberg: Starting from the Koo Valley to Montagu, hikers will be spoilt with views from rocky ridges and ample vegetation. Some hikers have even noted that one can clearly see the Indian Ocean on a clear day.

Marloth: This is the longest single traverse in the entire series and sports some glorious boulders to scramble before making your way to Barrydale, situated in the Klein Karoo.

Duration: +- 10 days
Distance: +-115 km

Grootvadersbosch: Stretching from Grootvadersbosch to Gysmanshoek, past the famous Sleeping Beauty peak, this traverse will see you end in Riversdale while taking in the lush protea covered valleys and abandoned trails along the way.

Duration: +- 7 days
Distance: +- 82km

Gouritz: Through fynbos covered slopes and over long-forgotten trade routes, this hike will expose you to high peaks, green pastures, and spectacular views of Swartberg and the Indian ocean.

Duration: +- 8 days
Distance: +- 78km

Outeniqua: The final stage in the traverse takes hikers through the Cloete pass, Attakwas mountains, and Ruiterbos nature reserve, ultimately ending in Outeniqua. On the way you’ll spot some remote river valleys and bird-rich patches, so keep your eyes peeled.
