5 Pet Friendly Trails in Gauteng

What is adventure anyways without man's best friend? If you can't get enough of the trails, but would like to take your trusty K9 along, we've got the list to get you going. After all, nothing beats some fresh air, wagging tails and loads of sniffles in nature.

We were introduced to @market_dog_sa, or Fenrir as his owners call him on Instagram, and asked this adventurous mutt to share some of his favourite trails in his neck of the woods - Gauteng. Below, his vetted list of the best places to get your daily dose of adventure, four-legged friend en tow:

HEDIANGA FARM, Pretoria

Hedianga has trail options for runners, cyclists and hikers alike. There is an entry fee per person. Options include loops of 5km, 10km or 15km. Trails are easy to moderate. If you’re hiking with your dog, be prepared to slow your pace a little as you tackle a few rock-strewn inclines and declines. The farm has designated off/ on lead zones. Pack sufficient water supplies! Heat aside, we thoroughly enjoyed the dusty trails that ushered us through the farm’s diverse landscapes. Remember to be mindful of their 'leash on' and 'leash off' times, as well general safety information around their COVID-19 regulations.

Check out their Facebook page for more information.

BRAAMFONTEIN SPRUIT, Bryanston and surrounds

The Spruit is your go-to green, serene space to decompress from daily city stresses. Dogs are allowed off lead throughout the riverside ramble. There are separate paths for walkers and cyclists so one can easily avoid any awkward, ‘dog-meet-cyclist,’ conflicts. Along the way, you’ll have access to bins so remember to bring along your, ‘Poo Bags.’ No, seriously, please do that! The area is maintained by an NPO: The Braamfontein Spruit Rehabilitation Project

HOMESTEAD DAM, Benoni

Alongside the huge dam, filled with flocks of Egyptian geese, and lined by avid fisherman, runs a paved pathway. Dogs and their walkers can get up close and personal with the body of water, so long as they watch out not to tangle any fishing lines in the process! After a while, the path falls away and you’re free to make your own trail through the grassy field running alongside the dam. The area is generally quiet during the week. If you’re walking over the weekend, keep your leash handy as there are usually more visitors milling around. No entry fees, the park is open to the public. Definitely highly recommended for doggos who enjoy getting a splash in before heading home.

Locate the dam on Google Maps.

SABLE RANCH, Magaliesburg

If scrambling up a craggy, pretty darn steep mountain side appeals to you, drive out to the Sable Ranch venue! This trail is likely a little more challenging than your casual stroll in the local dog park. The venue, as a whole, centres around adventure and action! The heat can get intense so ensure you pack enough liquids for you and your dog! We suggest heading out very early in the morning to conquer this one. Take your pick of trails ranging between 5km-12km. Views are spectacular! After your hike, the venue boasts a charming, canopied area to grab a bite and a beer while you cool off! Score!

KRANSKLOOF HIKING TRAILS, Mpumalanga (For adventuring further afield)

Breathtakingly beautiful, this spot is a gem for any keen hiker. Kranskloof hiking trails, about 30 minutes-drive from the small town of Carolina, in Mpumalanga. The trails lie within the Komati Gorge Nature Reserve. Trails wind through undulating hills, forested thickets of indigenous trees and shrubbery, through mountain streams and along the precipice of the gorge. Herds of antelope and other wildlife spill across the distant koppies. Day visitors are welcome but if you want to get the most out of your trip, book a few nights in the basecamp (back-packers style*). Embrace the seclusion of the camp and rough it! On a clear night, the stars alone will make it all worth it! We suggest prepping a night cap, lighting some lanterns to guide your path…and then blowing them out to absorb Kranskloof’s night sky in all its glory!

*As one may share accommodations with other campers, ensure your dog is well socialised.
