TRAVERSE MTB SHOE

BEHIND THE DESIGN

We take you behind the design of our brand new cycling shoe

THE INSPIRATION

At First Ascent, our design principles are based entirely around Performance. With this in mind, it assists us with ensuring we design the right product, for the right purpose. The inspiration behind the design of our new Traverse MTB shoe lies in combining both running and cycling.
Incorporating elements of a running shoe into the design of a cycling shoe, combined with modern technology, lead us to develop the ultimate pair of versatile cycling shoes ideal for on and off the bike.

CONCEPT 2

It was important for us to clearly establish the requirements of the two different disciplines, being running and cycling. This formed the base and was an integral part of the entire design process of the Traverse MTB Shoe. The ultimate challenge being to design a shoe that performs while cycling, however also providing superior comfort off the bike.

The design of the shoe begun with the development of the sole, which required a perfect balance between rigidness and comfort. Too much rigidness in the sole reduces comfort, while too much flexibility will decrease the power output. It was important for us to maintain a good balance between power output and comfort, which was assisted by the inclusion of the brace on the main impact area, which allows for enough flexibility while still achieving maximum pedal power.

CONCEPT 3

We investigated ways to improve the power transfer and performance of the shoe. One idea (that made it into the final concept) was to incorporate an additional brace. A brace provides extra stabilisation for the foot and pedal motion while still being flexible enough while walking.

As we did not want to compromise on the design look and feel by using two straps, the bottom brace was secured using a core lacing system while the top brace evolved into a velcro strap.

The end result, is a mountain bike shoe which is not only comfortable to walk in but has the same, if not more power capability of a conventional pair of mountain biking shoes.

KEY FEATURES

RECESSED INNER CLEAT

The recessed inner cleat socket in the Traverse shoe is a key feature. By recessing the cleat socket we have improved walking comfort on rough terrain or walking around the bike paddock, as well as reducing wear on the cleat. The shoe is equipped with a cleat socket cover if a cleat cycling system is not preferred.

SUPPORT SYSTEM

By including a Core Lace System to secure the bottom bracing, as well as the additional top velcro brace, the power capability and performance of the shoe is increased by providing additional rigidity on the upwards power stroke.

INCREASED TRACTION

The Durable MD Rubber Sole has been designed with off the bike traction and shock absorbing properties in mind.
