Riaan… he’s nearly home!

On July 8th 2009 solo-adventurer Riaan Manser will again make history when he becomes the first person to kayak, alone and unaided, around Madagascar.

For the last eleven months Riaan has been circumnavigating the entire 5000 kilometre coastline of the world’s fourth largest island. It has been a true journey of trials and tribulations.

According to legendary adventure kayaker, Johan Loots, Riaan’s Madagascar expedition should be counted as one of the great feats of human endurance ‘and should go down in the annuals of adventure as one of the greatest of all time.

‘From the very beginning Riaan has had to face the hardships of the real, solo adventurer: the preparation, the searching for a suitable craft, the shipping and visa problems and then the cyclones, surf, storms, distances, tropical disease, muggings, arrests and even a coup d’état! Done on a shoestring with hardly a whimper, the achievement is, quite frankly, nothing short of sensational.’

Riaan is set to cross the finish line in Tamatave, Madagascar on Wednesday 8th July 2009 and will return to South Africa on Saturday 11th July at 13h00, after which a press briefing will be held at OR Tambo International Airport.

Anyone interested to attend would be more than welcome and we have no doubt that Riaan would be most appreciative to see as many friendly faces as possible.

We are certainly hoping to give Riaan a heroes welcome when he gets back to Cape Town, which is scheduled for Friday the 17th.
