MAST… what a blast!
At no point in time did we ever say that this event was for ‘softies’ or that it would be a ‘gentle meander up a hill’, but when Saturday morning dawned with low lying clouds and a serious chill in the air, many would have been excused for ignoring their alarms. For the ‘committed’ entrants backing down was however never an option… they’d accepted the challenge and would rise to meet it!
The inclement weather certainly added another challenging dimension to the already challenging route and hyperthermia was very much a reality as cyclists in particular struggled to tighten their grip on their brakes as they made their way down the mountain.
Fortunately all made it down to home base in the lower Tokai forest unscathed but they certainly all had an exciting story to share.
Everyone was welcomed by some well deserved free Fast Fuel energy replacement drinks and the crew from Spur and The Bean There Coffee Company were cooking and brewing up a serious storm.
Special thanks also goes to Sportsmans Warehouse for their logistical support on the day as well as making their mobile repair centre available for any emergency bike repairs.
The feedback from event participants has been overwhelming positive and this certainly has encouraged us to ensure that this event will be back, ‘bigger and better’, next year.
