Lake Tanganyika in a kayak
Lake Tanganyika is the longest freshwater lake in the world and has never been kayaked in its entirety mostly due to the previous political instability in the region. Although the direct distance between Mpulungu, Zambia and Bujubura in Burundi is a ‘mere’ 673km, the team of intrepid kayakers believe that they will paddle nearly 730 km by the time they complete their journey.
The team has appropriately selected Dare to Dream, a public benefit organisation working primarily with children with life threatening illnesses, and will donate all the funds raised from their expedition to this worthy cause.
The other charitable component of the expedition focuses on reducing the malaria risk local inhabitants around the lake face and this allowed First Ascent the opportunity to donate mosquito nets, which Morné and Louis have distributed.
The expedition is now well underway with the team having completed more than half the total distance required to achieve this record breaking attempt and are going strong.
We wish Morné and Louis wind at their backs for the last leg of their epic journey.
